The cause of anencephaly is disputed. generally, neural tube defects do not follow direct patterns of heredity, though there is some indirect evidence of inheritance. The major causes of anencephaly disorder are lack of folic acid. Therefore it is recommended that all women of child-bearing age consume 0.4mg of folic acid daily especially those attempting to conceive or may possibly conceive, as this can reduce the risk to 0.03%. it is not advisable to wait until pregnancy has begun, since by the time a woman knows she is pregnant, the critical time for the formation a neural tube defects has usually already passed. It is a must to those who had no child affected before to take 400mcg of folic acid and to those who were previous affected children must take 5mg of folic acid in order to prevent the disorder like anencephaly.

Folic acid is include the vitamin B9 that is essential to numerous bodily functions. the functions are to synthesize, repair and methyl ate DNA. it is also to act as a cofactor in biological reactions involving folate. It is especially importantin aiding cell division and growth, such as in infancy and pregnancy. Children and adults both require folic acid to produce healthy red blood cells 

Some of the sources of folic acid are:

  • Leafy vegetables such as spinach, asparagus, turnip greens
  • Legumes such as dried or fresh beans, peas and lentils
  • Egg yolks
  • Barker's yeast
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Some breakfast cereals (ready to eat and others)
  • Fruits ( orange juice, canned pineapple juice, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, grapefruit juice, banana, raspberry, grapefruit and strawberry ).
  • Vegetables (beets, corn, tomato juice, vegetable juice, broccoli, brussels sprouts, romaine lettuce and bok choy)

Normal individual need 500-20000 of folic acid in their body.
