Background


  • Anencephaly is a severe form of Neural Tube Defects where a large part of the brain and skull is absent.
  • The incidence occurs in 1 out of 10,000 births.
  • Having one infant with anencephaly will increase the risk of having another with neural tube defects as well. (if no act of prevention is taken).
  • The baby will be born with little (or no) scalp, no meninges, one (or none) brain hemisphere, lacking in cerebellum and missing bones around the front & sides of the face.
